Not financial or legal advice

Everything here is general educational content. When to claim depends on your health, your savings, your spouse's record, your tax position and your work plans. No article can weigh those for you. Speak with a qualified advisor before you file.

About our calculator

It uses the Social Security Administration's own reduction and delayed credit formulas and reproduces their published percentages. It still leaves things out: cost of living adjustments, the earnings test if you work before full retirement age, spousal and survivor benefits, taxation of benefits, and Medicare premiums deducted from payments. It also assumes the figure you enter is accurate. Your real numbers are on your SSA statement.

Beware of impostors

Social Security is a common target for scams. The SSA will not call to threaten you, demand payment in gift cards, or ask you to confirm your Social Security number to keep your benefits. We will never ask for your Social Security number at all. Official services are free at SSA.gov, and you never need to pay anyone to apply for benefits.

Rules change

Benefit figures change annually and rules change with legislation. State tax treatment in particular has changed fast, with several states repealing their tax on benefits in recent years. We date our figures, and you should still confirm anything important against the official source.
